City Safety, are the two main features that are rocking the automotive world today. The 2010 XC60 is a luxury compact crossover that includes the comprehensive set of all Volvo safety features. People are thoroughly impressed with the City Safety feature. It’s standard from Volvo and is designed to prevent rear-end collisions. Radar guided detectors sense the traffic ahead at speeds of 19 mph or less. If the driver is not responding in time, the XC60 actually applies its own brakes. This Volvo-first safety feature will soon be duplicated from various other prominent automakers.
The Volvo XC60 is also quite the looker. Its good looks are topped by its spacious interior and superior comfort offerings. It’s also a very powerful vehicle easily capable of making you feel like you are driving something far less safe. It is offered is a singular trim: the T6 AWD. Leather upholstery, 2-zoned climate control systems, front seating that power adjusts 8 different directions, driver seat position memory, heated outside mirrors, remote keyless entry, USB port, auxiliary input jack and both frontal and rear skid plates are all standard features. Nice.
Everyone knows that Volvo has been making granite-solid cars for public consumption since 1927. What many fail to consider is that, after all that time, it becomes very difficult to continue to outdo your own set standards of performance - each and every year. Volvo has done it again. In fact, many agree that the new XC60 is the safest car that has ever been designed and manufactured.
Adaptive cruise control and the revolutionary in-city brake assist system, City Safety, are the two main features that are rocking the automotive world today. Volvo XC70 has come around the millennial bend as its own stand-alone model. This mid-size station wagon has never been the wood-paneled clunker of times past. When the trim level was introduced in 1998, Volvo’s V70 was unlike any other wagon on the market. It featured Volvo’s classic boxy style and superior safety features. Now, after several different incarnations, the Volvo XC70 is a crossover model that has been given seventy new features for the 2008 model year.
The V70’s Cross Country trim was hailed as the best level, so Volvo did something unexpected. They made it its own model in 1999. However, it still was not called the XC70. Instead, Volvo kept the name Cross Country and marketed it as a flashy station wagon, what some believed was an oxymoron. Nevertheless, buyers came from far and wide to get their hands on the vampy wagon. The next year brought about even more changes for the Cross Country. This time they changed the name to an abbreviated version. “X” standing for “Cross,” and “C” standing for “Country.” The “70″ was taken from the original V70 model to reflect its roots. This time the name stuck, and Volvo has had great success with the latest iteration of the model.
1.6 L, 1.8 L, 1.9 L (Diesel or 2.) L fuel injected versions. North American buyers could only buy a Volvo S40 with a 1.9 L engine, which provided 168 hp.
Partway through the 2004 model year, the second generation of S40s hit the market. This version was based on the Volvo P1 platform, and was built at the company factory located in Ghent, Belgium. The V40 was replaced at this point by the V50 estate (station wagon).
The Volvo S40 was one of the nominees for World Car of the Year for 2005. This model did with the designation as Canadian Car of the Year in the Best New Sport Compact category that same year. This is not the only place where the S40 was recognized, though; the South African Guild of Motoring Journalists put the matter to a vote and declared the it the South African Care of the Year in 2005. In the year of the gas hike, the 2008 Volvo S40 offers a 19 mpg for city driving and 27 mpg for highway usage, and comes closer than ever to the Audi A6 in build quality.
NHTSA and IIHS safety ratings are not available; however, being a Volvo, one would expect the safety ratings to be at least average for a small car, possibly better. Among the safety features are an anti-theft device, antilock brakes with electronic braking assistance, traction control and vehicle stability control and keyless entry. Strangely enough for a car clearly built with young families in mind, there are no child safety locks.
Base price on the 2009 Volvo C30 is $23,800, with a base of $25,950 on the R-Design. That makes it among the most expensive in its class. Yet, as seems to be the case too often with Volvo, while you get a good car, you don’t quite get the great car you expect when you buy a European luxury vehicle.
The new XC90 is all of that in a beautiful package. Seating for 5 or 7 only hints at what this SUV is capable of. With perfect road manners on dry pavement or muddy driveway, the XC90 is dependable, secure, and safe with every safety feature imaginable. Driving the XC90, you are infused with a feeling of entitlement and driving superiority.
With every 2007 Volvo S80 you see, you are witness to the finest Volvo on the road today. The flagship of the fleet, the S80 is powered to stay out in front and engineered to the most critical tolerances. With its ground-breaking V8, Volvo makes a bold statement that reverberates through the automotive industry, the perfect balance of comfort and response.
Volvo was the first to introduce side airbags
18th June 2009
To add to its SIPS in 1995 Volvo was the first to introduce side airbags and installed them as standard equipment in all models in 1995. In 1998 Volvo also developed and was the first to install a head-protecting airbag,[citation needed] which was made standard in all new models as well as some existing models. The head-protecting airbag was not available on the 1996 C70 due to the initial design deploying the airbag from the roof; the C70, being a convertible, could not accommodate such an airbag. Later years of the C70 featured a head-protecting airbag deploying upwards from the door, negating the issue of roof position. It has been stated by many testing authorities that side head protecting curtain airbags can reduce risk of death in a side impact by up to 40% and brain injury by up to 55%, as well as protecting in a rollover situation.
In 1998, Volvo introduced its Whiplash Protection System (WHIPS), a safety device to prevent injury of front seat users during collisions.[15] In 2004, Volvo introduced the BLIS system, which detects vehicles entering the Volvo’s blind spot with a side view mirror mounted sensor and alerts the driver with a light. That year also saw Volvos sold in all markets equipped with side-marker lights and daytime-running lights (the latter having already been available in many markets for some time). Much of Volvo’s safety technology now also goes into other Ford vehicles. In 2005 Volvo presented the second generation of Volvo C70, it comes with extra stiff door-mounted inflatable side curtains (the first of its kind in a convertible).
In 1944, laminated glass was introduced in the PV model.[15] In 1958, Volvo engineer Nils Bohlin invented and patented the modern 3-Point Safety Belt, which became standard on all Volvo cars in 1959.[16] Volvo was the first company to produce cars with padded dashboards starting in late 1956 with their Amazon model.[citation needed] Additionally, Volvo developed the first rear-facing child seat in 1964and introduced its own booster seat in 1978.
In 1986, Volvo introduced the first central high-mounted stoplight[15] (a brake light not shared with the rear tail lights), which became federally mandated in the United States in the 1986 model year. Seat belt and child seat innovation continued as shown in the 1991 960. The 960 introduced the first three-point seat belt for the middle of the rear seat and a child safety cushion integrated in the middle armrest. Also in 1991 came the introduction of the Side Impact Protection System (SIPS) on the 940/960 and 850 models, which channeled the force of a side impact away from the doors and into the safety cage.
