    Volvo gives C30 the slip

    21st July 2011

Volvo has greenified the C30 by following the VW BlueMotion template: shunning hybrid drivetrains and regenerative braking in favour of slippier aerodynamics, longer gearing and low friction tyres.

The C30 is also gets Volvo’s new Powershift diesel transmission, a dual-clutch automatic gearbox similar to VAG’s DSG effort. Coupled to the aero modifications - which include more streamlined 16-inch alloys, impressively - this helps the C30 Efficiency achieve 62.8mpg (a jump of 5mpg over the stock 1.6-litre C30 turbodiesel) and sneak below 120g/km of CO2.

No, it’s not the most sexy eco-technology around, but this BlueMotioning (we’ll let VW have it, they got there first) approach is all good news.

We’d expect more manufacturers to follow suit, but sadly we can’t see a streamlined, skinny-tyred Hummer on the horizon any time soon. Pity.

Just like most of the cars that is marketed and produced under the Volvo brand, the Volvo S60 sedan is a luxury car. The design was the product of the creative mind of Peter Horbury. For this sedan, the advertising tagline was “Revolvolution”.

Volvo vehicles metric unit of area that equals 100 square meters more known to be box type cars and vehicles. However, the Volvo S60 seems to be the start of a new fad and generation of Volvos for this sedan is known as the curvier and softer vehicle under this brand. Given as an option for this vehicle is a new system that the company calls BLIS which means blind spot information system and of course this is for added safety.

Another safety feature for this vehicle is the rain repellent coating on the front side window of the car and the mirror glass which assists in keeping the vehicle clear. And once a person takes a ride inside the vehicle, they would be able to notice the fine and luxurious features that the vehicle holds inside like its center console which has been ideally and functionally located as well as designed to exude luxury.

The “Instant Traction” all-wheel drive XC60 is powered by a 240-hp 3.2-liter inline-six-cylinder or turbocharged 300-hp 3.0-liter engine matched with a Geartronic six-speed automatic transmission. A front-wheel drive model is available with the 3.2-liter engine. A 230-hp 3.2-liter PZEV engine is also available. Each engine is available in base or R-Design trim. Equipped with a new safety feature called ?City Safety? the XC60 reacts at low speed to help prevent or reduce rear-end collisions. Other standard features include electronic stability with roll control, trailer stability assist, six airbags, four-wheel anti-lock brakes, and HD radio for high performance sound. Optional features include a Dynaudio sound system, Keyless Drive, a Panoramic Moonroof, Active Bi-Xenon headlamps, and a Collision Avoidance Package for even more safety.

The Volvo XC60 standard equipment includes City Safety, a revolutionary new system designed to prevent or minimize low impact collisions.  When going at 18 miles per hour or slower, collision detectors will scan the area in front of the car for vehicles that have suddenly stopped.  If it sees a collision is likely, it will automatically apply the brakes without driver intervention. Adaptive Cruise Control will sense when the car in front is slowing down, and adjusts itself accordingly, eventually coming to a full stop if necessary.  As part of the optional Technology Package, the XC60 can also be equipped with a pedestrian detection system that uses cameras and radar to initiate auto-brakes if a person is in front of the vehicle.  These features gave the Volvo XC60 its nickname: “The car that stops itself.”

There are other high-tech safety features on the XC60, such as the Blind Spot Notification system: a warning light that tells the driver when a vehicle is in his or her blind spot.

The Land Departure system will audibly alert the driver when he or she drifts out of a lane without signaling or actively using the steering wheel.  This feature has 2 levels of sensitivity and can be deactivated completely from the control panel.

The XC60 is a premium crossover from Volvo. Comfortable and practical, the XC60 may be the safest vehicle Volvo has ever built. It includes many safety features, and it’s good looks and dynamic styling make it immediately recognizable as a Volvo. For 2011 the engines receive horsepower increases, the 3.2 liter engine to 240-hp, and the turbocharged 3.0 liter to 300-hp.

Volvo developed the C30 to compete in the hotly contested compact car market and also fill a gap in their model lineup. The C30 has been designed for young professionals, singles, and couples without children.

To do this Volvo listened to what their potential clients wanted. A stylish, nimble runabout with 2 door and 4 seats was the consensus and so is the C30.

The C30 gets some of its style from the Volvo Safety Concept Car (SCC) and also the 3CC concept car, while also looking to the classic P1800 ES for inspiration for the rear glass tailgate. And despite its smaller size the car is clearly Volvo, especially from the front and rear angles.

Powered by a 2.4 litre, 5 cylinder, turbocharged engine making 260 horsepower running through a 6-speed manual gearbox, the C30 Design Concept reaches 60 mph in just 6 seconds, and continues on to a limited top speed of 150 mph.

Active enthusiasts expect flexibility as well as performance, and the HEICO C30 features all-wheel drive, making it the perfect performer on the street and on the mountain. At home on the switchbacks or on the slopes, the HEICO C30 concept is part Paris-Dakar raider, part efficient weekend gear hauler, and part stylish, sporty performer.

ipd’s recipe for this year’s SEMA show takes an already potent 220 horsepower (European-spec engine) turbocharged powertrain and massages it to nearly 400 horsepower with software upgrades and a belt-driven supercharger. Next, throw in a leading-edge mobile electronics package conceived by Alpine and Apple with native i-Tunes technology. Blend with the curvaceous body on fully adjustable coil over suspension, sexy alloys and hot, sticky rubber. Sprinkle in a big brake package that makes stopping as fun as accelerating. Wrap it all in a wild Swedish flag themed paint and interior and you’ve got ipd’s C30 SEMA Concept.
